Those on raffle duty, it is only the selling of the tickets, the club has accepted to responsibility for the prizes. There will be a container of mixed prizes held in the store room of the tennis club.
A few of us attended (see photos) the Pie and Port evening held by the Rochester Rotary Club Saturday gone. Great night had by all, around 60-70 in attendance. Well patronized by Custer clubs including District hierarchy past and present. The local pies and pastries were great again, unfortunately I did not sample the wines and port as I was the designated driver, I was informed that they were quite good
The inaugural Josh Brady Memorial Ramble is on this Sunday the 15th. Party to leave Malmsbury Botanical Gardens (near public toilets) for new adventure 9:00 am SHARP. Along the way there will opportunities for experienced and non-experienced walkers with some easy walk tracks. Venue for lunch will be at the home of Barb and John Cannon. Don’t forget to try and car share also bring a plate.

The guest speaker for the meeting was Natalie Chester. Natalie is the regional representative for Wildlife Conservation International. Natalie's stall at the Easter Market captured the attention of a number of Rotarians. Wildlife Conservation International has a focus on the plight of orangutans, elephants and tigers. Natalie has a special interest in the conservation of orangutans which are especially suited to the natural environment and conditions which exist in South East Asia. There are several competing forces in this area which make the long term future of the orangutan very problematic.
Natalie's keen interest in orangutans had its origins when she lived as a child in Malaysia where her father had a posting with the army. Her International School arranged a sponsorship for Charlie, an orangutan with the Kuala Lumpur zoo. Charlie visited the school regularly and Natalie made the most of the opportunity to get to know him and learn about orangutans. On a visit to the Singapore zoo some thirty four years later Natalie spotted a sign indicating that the orangutan, Charlie, had been donated from the Kuala Lumpur zoo. On spotting Natalie Charlie extended his arms, made grunting noises and came to sit against the glass where she was standing. There was no doubt that after all those years he had remembered her.
The work of Wildlife Conservation International includes lobbying to protect the habitat of the orangutan by regulating the extension of palm oil plantations. The habitat of orangutans is ideal for growing palm oil which has multiple uses. In the short term the industry is economically advantageous and provides employment. Wildlife Conservation International has to compete with corrupt government practices and pressure from developers in gaining access to land leases where orangutans can live safely and naturally.
The work of Wildlife Conservation International also includes the rescue of injured orangutans, their rehabilitation and eventual return to the wild. The work also includes the detection and prosecution of poachers who provide orangutans to wealthy people looking for a pet. Orangutans because of the size they grow to as adults and the time required for them to be reared are most unsuitable as domestic pets. It was refreshing to experience Natalie's passion and her commitment to further this very worthy cause in our region.
