Industry Visit- Wednesday November 29th- Bendigo GovHub
There will be an Industry visit to the GovHub on Wednesday November 29th. We will meet on the corner of Lyttleton Terrace and St. Andrew's Avenue at 7.15AM. There is plenty of parking, however restrictions begin at 8.30AM by which time the tour will be finished.There is a need to register with your name and phone number. There will be a list circuting at our next two meetings for this. Family members are most welcome. Members are invited to adjourn to The Good Loaf for breakfast after the tour.

Co-President’s Report
Thanks very much to our member Geoff Michell, for a most interesting talk about his family background and work career at this weeks’ meeting. He has certainly led a busy and interesting life as firstly, an engineer, and later, a water-providing guru for us in Bendigo and beyond. Member's
talks are always interesting, and a keenly anticipated feature of our meetings.
For the first time, this year we have been invited by the RSL to take part in the Remembrance Day service at 11am this Saturday. As a result, during the service, Ray will be placing a floral tribute to our countrymen and women in the forecourt of the Soldiers Memorial Institute on behalf
of our club.
A big thank you in advance to all who will be working at the Swap Meet over the next few days. Our thanks in particular to Glenn Maloney, who has spent many hours as our representative on the Swap Meet Committee, planning to make it a successful event, and to Ian Johnson, for his work in
arranging our rostering duties.
Just a reminder that our AGM will be held on 22 November. Please consider seriously to take the opportunity to put your hand up for one of the several Board positions that are still vacant. If we don’t have board members, we don’t have a club …… Ray and Adrian are keen to discuss vacant board positions and get them settled just as soon as possible. It’s not hard work – it’s actually very satisfying to take part in steering the direction of the club, and our role in our community and beyond.
Training sessions for the president-elect start with a short online meet and greet session on the evening of Monday, 11 th December via Zoom. Ray and Adrian will attend this session in the absence of any other member/s wishing to be our president.
Please contact Barb Mitchell to indicate your interest in attending our Christmas breakup luncheon, to be held at the Marong Family Hotel on Sunday, 10th December at 12 noon. We were lucky – we were able to secure this date only as a result of a cancellation.
In the meantime, we look forward to Mark Anderson’s Zoom presentation on things Rotary next week. We hope for a good roll up on the day, and to greet other members via Zoom.

Guest speaker - Geoff Michell
Geoff kindly agreed to share with fellow members a "Member's Memories" presentation. Geoff is the eldest of four children and is a fourth generation Bendigonian. He attended Flora Hill Primary School and Bendigo High. His son and daughter live in Bendigo and he is the proud grandfather of four grandchildren.
He graduated in Civil Engineering from the Bendigo Institute of Technology and later completed a Masters of Business. Geoff's father was a builder in Bendigo. He spent a lot of his school holidays helping on site and in doing so picked up many woodworking skills.
Geoff was the first junior champion of the Bendigo Yacht Club. It was here that he later met his partner, Wendy. He enjoys the outdoors, walking and riding, and in recent times has taken up golf.
Geoff's first job was in an oil refinery in Sydney. He was horrified at the amount of business which involved "brown paper bags." He worked in construction in Melbourne where he eventually took up a position with the State Rivers and Water Supply Commission. After working in Camperdown and Geelong he transferred to Bendigo.
At this time there were many small water Boards. Geoff commented that places like Elmore had its own board. During the Kennett years there was a regionalisation of the Water Industry. Coliban Water saw the amalgamation of many water boards. Geoff became CEO of Coliban Water and was Managing Director for ten years. During his time water treatment plants resulted in a supply of clean water for Bendigo. The sourcing of the necessary equipment for this involved trips overseas. Geoff enjoyed the silver service in the shadows of the Eiffel Tower.
Coliban Water has in recent years faced the challenges of drought. The pipeline from the Goulburn system has secured water supply for Bendigo. Rotary has been an important part of Geoff's life. He has been a member of many boards in Bendigo most notably the hospital where during his time the new hospital was built. In all Geoff has made a very significant contribution to the Bendigo community. Proper retirement gives him the opportunity to enjoy his interest in travel. We thank Geoff for his very engaging presentation.
11 students across Bendigo will attend the National Youth Science Forum over 2 weeks in January (6 from BSSC, 3 from Marist, 2 from CMC). Our club will sponsor the 3 from Marist.
Their names are Charli Pigdon, Dylan Thompson and Brigid McGowan. Charli and Brigid will go to UQ in Brisbane for the program, while Dylan will go to ANU in Canberra.
There will be a pre-program morning tea for the 11 Bendigo students on Tue 5th Dec, 11am at PepperGreen Farm. Rotarians welcome to attend.
Defying the Drift
Our sponsored Weeroona College Yr10 student, Tess Donnelly successfully completed the program at the Longerenong College Horsham over 3 days in September. Tess will come to our meeting Wed 6th Dec to share some feedback about the program.
Lightning Reef Primary School
Deliveries of fruit from Coles is going well. Thanks to Colleen, the kids are currently working on a colouring-in project to say a personal thanks to Coles.
Gardening is progressing well. Some good crops of silverbeet, cauliflower and kale have been harvested in recent weeks. Tomatoes, carrots, spring onions, corn, squash, beans and strawberries on the way.
Passions & Pathways and the Body Safety programs, for which RCoBS has provided some financial support, are currently underway during Term 4.
At Wednesdays club forum John Canon spoke about the request for Rotarian that might be interested in assisting with judging the teams at this years Energy Breakthrough at Maryborough on Wednesday 22nd Nov and/or Friday 24th Nov.
Running for over 30 years and part of the educational value is that each team needs to do a 20 minute presentation about their campaign. As well as talking about their vehicle, they need to talk about team preparation, the environment and working with the community plus more. It is a great exhibition of the skills of our local students.
Rotarians are invited to part of our judging team for this section of the event which involves judging up to 10 teams starting at 9:30 through to about 4:30 so you would need to be in Maryborough before 9 am for the briefing.
Depending on the numbers there maybe an opportunity to car pool, Rotarian Nevelle Sharpe is a keen member of our judging team.

Castlemaine Rotary Truck Show: 25 & 26 November
Castlemaine is considered one of Australia’s premier country Truck Shows. Now in its 35th year, this year’s show is shaping up to be bigger than ever. It is also renowned for its family atmosphere. Children U16 are admitted free and the entertainment and rides are free. There is on ground catering and those who are mobility challenged can also enjoy a trishaw tour of the ground.
Live music all weekend will feature multi-award winning Country Music Singer and Songwriter, Craig Lloyd, whose singles have topped the charts in 2023. Crowd favourites, Peter Coad & The Coad Sisters and The Jim Hermel Band, will also be returning. A special feature on stage will be from 5 – 8pm on the Saturday night with a bar and food vans operating.
Gates open at 12 noon on Saturday and 10.00am on Sunday. Tickets are $15 per adult. U16 children free.
PP Larrie Winzar from Rotary Bendigo, has written a book 'Bliss' and all profits are being donated to Rotary projects that enhance the lives of women and girls locally, regionally and globally.
'Bliss' is a self-coaching book inspiring people of all ages and stages in their careers, and their life, to follow their bliss. This workbook fills a gap... it shares tools and strategies, questions, and exercises as well as motivation and wisdom based on Larrie's 35 year’s experience as a Career, Life &
Protirement Coach.
The Bendigo book launch is on Sunday, 19 November, 4-6pm, at Rotary Gateway Park in Kangaroo Flat. Additional books will be on sale at the launch for $30 and there will be plenty of seating available. Fabulous entertainment from Alli and Andrew Watts and delicious catering by Bendigo Inner Wheel.
