Home from a Rotary Leisure Caravanning Group gathering presented us with rather a handsome banner from RC Yarram.

Is looking for club banners or the like to take to Scotland on the Rotary Friendship Exchange tour, in August.

John Cannon has agreed to take up the cudgel and research purchase of banners.

Reports that the stakes have risen for successful Rotary International Scholarship awardees. We can only wish Doctor Nick well with his application.

Thanks to Jim Rolfe and Cathie Miler who have volunteered to review our assets stored upstairs at The Bridge, and to Glenn who has “volunteered” to rescue our lectern and have it repaired.

Set Up

Maybe, we should have a small cohort of “Set Up Team” members who know the ropes, to set us up each Wednesday.

From the “Lectern”:

President George reports that the home deck has finally been sanded “within an inch of its life” and three coats of oil dutifully applied. Visitors from Peru informed that the step lights were “Snake Alarms”. They believed me.

And, gratifying tale for Wayne, Chair Heritage Bendigo, of tram driver’s honesty and theatrical presentation of a visitor’s “lost” jewellery.

Conference looms:

St Patrick’s Day in the Warrnambool corner of Victoria, amidst all those Irish spud growers should be a hoot.

DGE Bronwyn Stephens will join us for an informal visit

March 21^st, and, will be ensconced at the award-winning Antoinette’s Bed & Breakfast.

Anticipating Alan Stevens’ presentation on caravans George admitted to the circumstances of his obtaining a Victorian Driver’s Licence, as he of the Axedale Cop Shop cringed.

Ted, respectful of the environmental wishes of Ian Riseley, is on the trail of trees and shrubs to plant in the OTIS Retreat environs.

Alan, our guest speaker and long-time pal of the gentle giant Ted, then took us into dusty sheds and back yards, homes of rescued motor cars and caravans.

Difference between a collector and a hoarder:

A Collector will eventually sell on.

The workmanship Alan illustrated in a 1938, yes, 1938, caravan left us in awe of those artisans.

And a “Poor Man’s Rolls”, that glorious haughty Austin, with a “block one metre high”, has been seen in many corners of Australia towing an eclectic array of vintage ‘vans.

We followed Kate Winslet into one of Alan’s ‘vans, in “The Dressmaker”. Alas, Alan was led to believe that the producers were to faithfully recreate the interior of the van for shooting in Melbourne, providing a duplicate treasure for the collector.

Instead, those modern cameras fitted into the ‘van.

And tea pots:

The Guinness Book of Records is contemplating his application for recognition of his collection of caravan tea pots.

[It does take all kinds]

Gerard commented on the lost arts of the workmanship displayed in Alan’s ‘vans.

Alan, man “off the land”, retired gentleman and artisan will be spotted, perched up like a chauffeur in that Austin, for many a year to come, keeping an eye out for clues to dusty treasures in farm sheds.

The Board of Management of Camp Getaway has decided to conduct the official opening of the new kitchen facility on Saturday 7^th April

2018 at 1.30 for 2pm.

The opening and presentation of Certificates of Appreciation to our supporters will be followed by afternoon tea and a tour of the kitchen

facility and the camp.

Farm & Road Safety Expo

Dear District 9800 Presidents

The Rotary Club of Rochester will hold the 20^th annual Farm and Road Safety Expo (FARSE) on Tuesday 21st August 2018.

I am writing to ask your Club members to make a note in their diary of the date. We invite your members to attend the Expo which is held at the Rochester Recreation Reserve (Football Ground) between 10am and 2:30pm. The FARSE is an annual major project of the Rotary Club of Rochester.

I am also asking whether any of your members are in a position to bring an exhibit to the Expo or know of someone or a business that would donate their time to put on a display or consider being a sponsor for the event.

In previous years exhibitors have included: several divisions of the Police Force; the CFA including their stop, drop and roll activity; the SES who demonstrate the jaws-of-life or other safety activities; the local Pony Club for horse safety; The Marine service for water safety; the local hospital, local farmers with their large implements and many others.

Any businesses or organisation with sponsorship of $500 or more will have their logo placed on all correspondence and handouts. For lesser amounts the sponsors name will be placed on the correspondence and handouts. There is also the offer of joint naming rights to the event for a donation of $3,000 or more.

As this is the 20^th annual Expo the Club members are looking to make the Expo bigger and better.

Our general clientele are primary students who we rely on to go home and pass on the safety message to their parents. We are planning to encourage the secondary schools to attend and, also more adults.

The Expo has between 600 and 1000 students attend on the day with teachers and parents.

A father passing by his teenage daughter’s bedroom was astonished to see the bed was nicely made and everything was neat and tidy.

Then he saw an envelope propped up prominently on the centre of the pillow. It was addressed “Dad”. With the worst premonition, he opened the envelope and read the letter with trembling hands:

“Dear Dad,
It is with great regret and sorrow that I’m writing you, but I’m leaving home. I had to elope with my new boyfriend Randy because I wanted to avoid a scene with Mom and you. I’ve been finding real passion with Randy and he is so nice to me. I know when you meet him you’ll like him too – even with all his piercing, tattoos, and motorcycle clothes. But it’s not only the passion Dad, I’m pregnant and Randy said that he wants me to have the kid and that we can be very happy together.

Even though Randy is much older than me (anyway, 42 isn’t so old these days is it? ), and has no money, really these things shouldn’t stand in the way of our relationship, don’t you agree? Randy has a great CD collection; he already owns a trailer in the woods and has a stack of firewood for the whole winter. It’s true he has other girlfriends as well but I know he’ll be faithful to me in his own way. He wants to have many more children with me and that’s now one of my dreams too. Randy taught me that marijuana doesn’t really hurt anyone and he’ll be growing it for us and we’ll trade it with our friends for all the cocaine and ecstasy we want. In the meantime, we’ll pray that science will find a cure for AIDS so Randy can get better; he sure deserves it!!

Don’t worry Dad, I’m 15 years old now and I know how to take care of myself. Someday I’m sure we’ll be back to visit so you can get to know your grandchildren.

Hands still trembling, her father turned the sheet, and read:
