Greetings all,

Thanks to Val & Tony for stepping in at short notice to tell us more about the FORaMEAL project. A terrific initiative.

Rotary events coming up:

Nov 24^th at 7.30 am is the 28^th Paul Harris and Business Breakfast. You need to book online for this event. There is no cost.
We have made a booking for the Changeover/Christmas function for 13 December at the Bendigo Pottery in Epsom. Will be for two course lunch and include presentation of PHFs. Cost $30 includes a welcome drink. We will be looking for an indication later in November of who will be coming.
Volunteering to support Bendigo Foodshare Dec 21, Jan 4 & 11.

Message from International Director Geoff Michell

The Knitting Project is planning to receive knitting from knitters over a period of four weeks starting on Thursday 19^th Nov. at the “Ranch” in School St Cal Gully.

Geoff is looking for four volunteers to assist with the receival of the knitting between 9am and 11.30am on each of the four Thursdays.

If you can help on one or all of the days or for a part morning, Geoff would like to hear from you so he can put a roster together.

Guest Speaker

The guest speakers for the meeting were Val Cunniffe and Tony Laycock from the Rotary Club of Canterbury. Their club oversees the FORaMEAL project which provides emergency food for those suffering from natural disasters in The Philippines. This food comes in the form of packages made up of rice, oats and lentils. The project was developed by fellow member, Doug Hawley who is a Biochemist.The packages are stored in The Philippines for up to two years and distributed by local Rotary Clubs in the aftermath of natural disasters.

With the limitations on transport due to the pandemic a stockpile of packages has accumulated in Melbourne. These have been made available to families in Melbourne suffering hardship at this time. Members of RCoBS have also sourced the packages for distribution to the Afghani and Karen communities of Bendigo. Val and Tony noted that the project has attracted good levels of sponsorship and donations in kind. The Canterbury Club has managed to gain the support of other Rotary Clubs in the cluster.

Another successful aspect of the project has been the involvement of students for local Secondary Schools. This involvement has had both a service and educational focus. Learning opportunities including cooking, fundraising, marketing and event management have been integrated into the project. The students of Tay Creggan, Strathcona, raised $3,000. Club members set up the raw materials for the students to put into the packages. These packaging days provide team building opportunities for the students.

Val and Tony's presentation produced a lively discussion about further possibilities with this project. These included the possibility of developing a cluster project along similar lines to Canterbry and involving members of the Afghani and Karen communities. It is anticipated that the demand will continue as will the need for ongoing support to ensure the sustainability of the project. We thank Val and Tony for being our guests and we congratulate them on the success of the project. We are especially grateful to them for joining us at such short notice.

Donations of used computers from fellow Rotarians and friends delivered to Tom Cecil for eventual use in the Congo.

CENTURION WEEK

From Rob Byrne, Senior Coordinator – Foundation Services, Rotary South Pacific & Philippines Office

The districts in Australia and New Zealand initiated the Centurion Program many years ago, as an easy way for all Rotarians to support their charity, The Rotary Foundation.

Program members are asked to make a yearly contribution of AUS$100 or more to the Foundation’s Annual Fund. That’s about $2 per week.

This year, the Australian and New Zealand districts are launching Centurion Week in the second week of Foundation Month, from 9^th to 15^th November. With Rotary about to celebrate 100 years in Australia and New Zealand, it’s a great time to become a Centenary Centurion!

Three sons left home, went out on their own and prospered. They discussed the gifts they were able to give their elderly mother. The first said: “I built a big house for our mother”.

The second said: “I sent her a Mercedes with a driver”.

The third said: “You remember how our mother’s favourite book is To Kill A Mockingbird? Well, now she can’t see very well. So I sent her a remarkable parrot that recites the entire book. It took a trainer 12 years to teach him. Mama just has to name the chapter and the parrot will recite it”.

Soon thereafter, their mother sent out her letters of thanks. “William,” she said, “the house you built is so huge. I live only in one room, but I have to clean the whole house. Arnold, I am too old to travel. I stay most of the time at home so I rarely use the Mercedes. And that driver is so rude! He’s a pain!”

Shocked, the brothers read on.

“But David,” she said, “the chicken was delicious!”
