PRESIDENT’S REPORT – OCTOBER 7, 2023
Hello to you all as we move into a busy couple of months for our club.
Stewart Annan, our Director for all things environmental, is taking part in an ESRAG conference on Zoom this coming
Tuesday, and will give us a report on the latest happenings at our meeting next week. Thanks for this, Stewart, and
we look forward to hearing from you.
Our Mystery Tour happens next Sunday, and should be great fun – thanks to Linda, John C and Ned for putting this
together for us. I will be making sure our petrol tank is full before we head off, just in case ………
Later in the month, on Wednesday, 18th October, our usual meeting is replaced by our club catering for cyclists on
Ride To Work Day, which is sponsored by the City of Greater Bendigo. This Covid-interrupted event is always
enjoyable and meaningful, so all we need is some fine weather on the day to top it off.
Swap Meet is rapidly approaching, so please try to help out as much as you can in putting up your hand to work
some shifts. It’s always a pleasure to work at the Swap Meet – there are always some amazing characters in the
customer pool for starters!! There’s also the bonus of mingling socially with Rotarians from other Bendigo clubs at
this iconic event. Please contact Stan Hendy or Ian Johnson, who are compiling our roster, if you can help out.
Friends and relatives are also most welcome to assist if you can twist an arm or two …….
Finally, at some stage we will need to change the appearance of our current badge to better reflect RI guidelines on
branding and signage. No mad panic, but it really needs to be done. Please speak to Cathie Miller, our Club Service
director, for further information on this issue. It’s your opportunity to come up with a brilliant new design and earn
the undying admiration of your peers.

Guest speaker - NIGEL PRESTON
Guest Speaker- Nigel Preston
Nigel is the Education Team Leader for Energy Breakthrough, a program which invites schools to participate in designing, building and racing human and electric powered vehicles. The Energy Breakthrough concept had its beginnings during the 1980's and even though participation meant travelling to South Australia it created a lot of interest in Victorian schools. In 1990 Country Education funding provided the resources to bring the idea to Victoria and Maryborough was chosen as the preferred venue for the culminating event.
Energy Breakthrough brings together the academic, practical and social components of a sound educational model. Students are encouraged to use the thinking associated with the Technology and Science disciplines and apply them to the effective design of a vehicle. The assessment component includes presentation, design theory, endurance and teamwork which are needed for trials which are as long as twenty four hours in duration. The experience is very engaging for students, families and the wider community.
As well as the race trials there are opportunities to be involved with push carts, the junkyard challenge and a Technology challenge. The event is beginning to get back to the levels of participation experienced before covid. This year there will be 108 schools involved including 240 teams and 3,500 students.The culminating event will bring some 20,000 visitors to Maryborough, a huge boost to the local economy. Energy Breakthrough provides students with an early driving experience. Our own formula one driver, Oscar Piastri participated during his school days.
Nigel outlined some ways in which Rotarians can support the concept of Energy Breakthrough. First and foremost we can promote the idea educationally with those we meet and secondly our involvement in the running of the event and perhaps volunteering to be a judge would be wonderfully appreciated. Save the date- RCoBS Mystery tour!
Members please save Sunday October 15 in your diaries for the RCoBS Mystery Tour!
It will be a fun day out, driving through central Victoria and checking out some mystery destinations.
There will be challenges throughout the day, plus prizes and trophies at the end.
The club is subsidising this, and there will be a small cost for lunch. Numbers needed next month.

End polio month fundraising walk
As part of End Polio Month and the associated regional fundraising project, the Rotary Club of Bendigo South has organised a fundraising walk for Sunday the 22nd October at Lake Weeroona, Bendigo.
It is suggested that each Club could contribute to the Fundraising Project by registering their club in order to raise/donate funds for the District.

This is information from the BYLAWS OF ROTARY INTERNATIONAL DISTRICT 9800 INC Ratified November 2019 Regarding the formation of the Nominating Committee to nominate the next District Governor. B. ADMINISTRATION 4. NOMINATION AND ELECTION OF DISTRICT GOVERNOR 4.2
The nominee shall be selected by a nominating committee (the Committee) who shall seek out and propose the best qualified candidate for governornominee.
Constituting the Committee
4.3 The Committee shall consist of:
a. the District Governor (who shall serve as Chairperson);
b. the most recent Past District Governor available;
c. the current District Governor Elect;
d. the current District Governor Nominee; and .
e. three Past Presidents of Clubs in the District who shall be elected by the Clubs in the District provided that: i. No more than one such Past President may come from any one Club; ii. None may be Honorary Members, or Past District Governors; and iii. No Past President elected under this clause (e) shall serve two consecutive terms on the Committee.
4.4 The District Governor shall call for nominations by 1st October in each year for the Committee under 4 .3 (e), such nominations to be received by a date not later than the 31st October in each year
Dear Club President
I am writing regarding the Nominating Committee, which will be formed to select the District Governor for the Rotary year 2026 – 2027. As you would be aware the role of District Governor will change under the new Regionalisation model and some of the duties of this role are at this stage unclear. Hence flexibility will be needed. However I have had it confirmed that Districts are expected to carry out this selection process and have a candidate in place. The first step for this is the formation of the Nominating Committee. Attached to this communication is a sheet giving details of the make up of this Committee. As you will see the timeline indicates that nominations for positions on it are open from 1 – 31 October. If you have a suitably qualified Rotarian in your club who would like to be nominated please email their details to me by 31 October. If I receive more than three nominations then a ballot will be conducted with each club voting. Nominations for the District Governor position will open in early November. Please encourage your members to consider putting their names forward for this position. If you have any questions please contact either myself or Jane Pennington.
