Co-President's report
This week, we enjoyed our second successive meeting with a representative of the City of Greater Bendigo as our guest speaker / host.
 
Last week, Anthony Pethebridge delivered a very informative
presentation on the city’s strategic planning division, and some of its current issues.
This week, Ben Devanny, Manager, Economic Development, led us on a most interesting tour of the new city office premises – GovHub. This building is designed to be a one-stop destination for ratepayers to deal
with the CoGB, as well as being the contact point for a number of Victorian State departments.

Christmas cakes and puddings.
Bendigo South RC is selling Christmas cakes and puddings as a
fundraiser for the Rotary Foundation. Please contact Ray if you would like to purchase any, as he is compiling a list to be sent soon to Bendigo South. Puddings are $20 each, cakes are $22 each (reusable tin) or $20 each (cardboard box).

Bendigo Health fundraising golf day, organized by Bendigo Toyota, held at Belvoir Park Golf Club, Friday 8 December. Even if you are not able to help
out on the barbeque, feel free to drop in and enjoy a lot of camaraderie from our club members and very appreciative golfers. You may even see our wannabe champion team and encourage them in their quest for a glorious victory ………
Cluster Rotary Foundation Dinner, organized by Bendigo Rotary club, Friday evening 8 December, at the Lake View Resort, Napier Street.
And we look forward to our Christmas luncheon at Marong Hotel on Sunday, 10 December at 12noon. Good venue, good food, GREAT company assured! Please contact Barb Mitchell as soon as possible to indicate your intention to attend.

Community Service update:
  • Thanks to all who helped at Anglicare Xmas BBQ for their foster parents and children
  • This Friday 8th the annual Toyota Golf day sponsoring food share, our team is very confident this year. Roster for the event will be sent out mid week. Thanks again in anticipation .
  • We have had correspondence from food share regarding pickup of food products from local supermarkets over the Xmas period, more to follow.
Offer of new clothing from Donation In Kind (DIK)
A very generous offer of clothing (see below). Do any members have any ideas?
 

"DIK is always keen to assist Clubs with their many endeavours.  We have just taken delivery of over 200 pallets of new and unbranded polo and T shirts, caps and flat library bags .

We have accepted this generous donation to use with the various overseas projects but the volume is such that we can also provide whatever quantity your Club might need for your local projects. 

The quality is good, we have a full range of sizes ranging from XXS through to XXXL in many colours.

There is a lot of sorting to be done and we will only supply by the carton. 

The goods must be collected from DIK Store with orders to Bronwyn Stephens@ rotaryDIKtreasurer@gmail.com or 0410 324 537."

Anglicare Christmas BBQ
A big thank you to the crew who helped out with the Anglicare Christmas barbecue for foster carers and children.
This is always much appreciated by the Anglicare community.

Industry visit - Bendigo GovHub
Ben Devanny, Manager Economic Development CoGB, took members on a guided tour of the newly opened Bendigo Govhub.
 
There are similar offices in Traralgon and Ballarat however Bendigo is the only one where council employees and state government employees are provided for in the same building. There are potential benefits from being together in areas such as planning where approvals are often the work of both state and local authorities. Security checks are required to gain access to the state government and council offices. There is public access to the ground floor where a cafe will soon be opened.
 
Ben outlined the locally significant considerations which were taken into account both in the design and building stages. There is a respectful and well integrated acknowledgement of First Nations people. Excavations unearthed remnants of the Sandhurst Hotel. Some 60,000 objects were recovered and await examination at the Bendigo Art Gallery. The presence of underground water prevented provision for an underground carpark. The location with the potential to bring 1,000 people into the CBD each day was a very important economic consideration.
 
Contemporary office design was apparent for all to see. The opportunity to work from home is encouraged when possible and there is only accommodation for 80% of the daily workforce to allow for this. The workplace is almost entirely based on electronic communication and document storage. Employees need to book a desk each day if they are working in the office and there are break out rooms for department meetings. All in all there are about 1,000 employees who work from the Govhub, 500 of those work for the council.
 
Significant vegetation has been retained and no desk is more than seven metres from natural light. Ben noted that whilst productivity gains are hard to assess at this early stage it is apparent that there has been less sick leave. The building is well ventilated except on Melbourne Cup Day when the state government controllers thought that there would be no need to have the systems running. It was a hot day and local employees had an uncomfortable morning until things could be restored.

Members enjoyed an industry visit to the new Bendigo GovHub last Wednesday.
RYLA dinner this week!
This year, RCoBS will sponsor Joe Deane to participate in RYLA. Joe works full time at Foodshare. He is a terrific young guy who will take a lot away from the RYLA program.
 
Joe describes himself as having a passion for “helping people who are currently going through food insecurity”, and as someone “who wants to make a positive impact on people who might be going through a low point in their lives”.
 
The host club for the RYLA dinner (Thu 7th Dec) is Rotary Club of Rochester. They are a small club and will really appreciate support from our Members for the dinner. Please contact Angela Beutel  daamb4570@gmail.com or Bryan Griffiths  bryangriffiths4@bigpond.com if you are able to attend.
