Around 200 kilograms of olives were harvested by around 14 willing volunteers and hopefully processed this coming Tuesday then set aside for eight weeks (allow to settle) before bottling and distribution. Thanks to all for helping to pick the olives weather was kind to us and the company great. Nearly forgot, thanks also to Bendigo South for their help

Guest Speakers

Guest Speaker

Georgie Redmond.
Georgie works as a Paramedic and is also the coordinator of the “Heart Matters” program in Bendigo. With that, she is part of a one-year project with Monash University, teaching people how to recognise the warning signs of heart disease and its major manifestation: heart attack.
Georgie related that heart disease is the largest cause of death in Australia and that there is one heart attack every nine minutes. A sobering thought. As well, Bendigo is one of the highest risk areas, due predominantly to the usual causes: smoking, obesity, lack of physical activity, unhealthy diet, low heart health knowledge (around 25% of people don’t know about heart disease) and oddly, low ambulance use.
Georgie’s major message, emphasised repeatedly, was DO NOT ignore the following signs of a heart attack.
  • Chest pain (the #1 sign) especially if it is a pain not felt previously
  • Pains in arms/shoulders/neck/jaw
  • Shortness of breath
  • Feeling sick or nauseous
  • Profuse cold sweating
  • Dizziness, Paleness
If any of these symptoms are apparent, do not delay or think “I’ll just see if it settles down.”
Call 000 immediately, every minute counts! Georgie was absolutely adamant on this point. You are NOT interrupting the busy ambulance service, this the reason that they exist. CALL 000 immediately!
Georgie also advises that we get a Heart Health Check from your doctor which will assess your risk factors and advise of any necessary heart-healthy changes to your lifestyle. Free through Medicare.

From Stew Annan
I met with the teacher who is in-charge of the Lightning Reef Education week Open Day. Her name is Elise Mackie. It's an open day where the parents are invited to come to the school, go into the classrooms to see what the kids do. I think the club has cooked for this in the past before my time. Details from Elise:
  • Date is Wed 1 June.
  • They will have a longer lunch break on the day 11:30 to 1:00, or maybe till 1:30. Parents stay for the lunch.
  • They will provide the sausages, bread, sauce and napkins. Only sausages on the menu, all without onions.
  • They will have 500 sausages which is 2 for each kid and the rest for parents and teachers.

500 seems like a lot of sausages. For 11:30 start with a school full of ravenous kids it will probably be best to get there in plenty of time to have 100 or so ready to go. Hopefully enough volunteers available. I guess we can work it all out on Wed morning
