Ride to Work Breakfast
Date/Time: 18th October 7:00 am
Venue: Civic Gardens on the Mundy St side of the town hall
Note: This event is replacing our normal meeting
Council is providing funds to Bike Bendigo to organise this year's public free Ride to
Work breakfast event. The event has not happened for the last number of years due
to COVID. Rotary Bendigo Sandhurst has cooked the breakfast including providing
the BBQ trailer for I think every year.
The event will be held in the Civic Gardens on the Mundy St side of the Town Hall in
the nice garden setting and in view of the new Law Courts and Gov HUB.
Our role in support of this initiative is to cook a BBQ breakfast and breakfast foods.
The exact items to be cooked / prepared / given away will depend on what sponsors
provide and they also need to be aligned as much as possible with Council's Healthy Food Policy.
 
 
Members please double check the roster. We are a dynamic club and changes can occur!
Reminder: if you are rostered on and cannot make it, please find someone to cover your spot.

Co-President's report

Hello to you all. Thanks to our guest speaker, Graeme Clark, of KLFM community radio, for his very interesting talk on Wednesday.

I was not aware of the key role KLFM plays in keeping the public informed when emergencies such as fire or floods, or other very serious events, occur in our region. As the only community radio station that has taken up this opportunity to try to keep its listeners and emergency services informed of events as they unfold, I was most impressed with the service, and the scale and quality of information KLFM is able to put out.
Our congratulations go to all the team at KLFM for the provision of this vital service for our safety.

It was nice to see John Clue again at our meeting. John is a member of the Castlemaine Rotary club, and was visiting us in relation to his involvement with our District Conference at the Ulumbarra Theatre next April.
John has been asked by DG Ron Payne to co-ordinate the Rotary Showcase at the conference, and he is working with John Cannon and John Harkin, who had both already kindly volunteered to work on the Showcase as our clubs’ contribution to the event. We are sure to see a bit more of John as the year unfolds, so please continue to make him feel welcome, as he has commented already on the friendship he has experienced with us.
 
Rotary Fruit Cakes and Puddings are again being sold by the Rotary Club of Melton Valley as a fundraiser for the Rotary Foundation. It’s a win-win situation when clubs buy them, as each club makes a small profit and Foundation also gets a donation from each item sold. Order forms are now available for us to purchase as a club if we wish.

Great Aussie Bird-Count. This week 16 to 22 Oct is the Great Aussie Bird-Count. This is a Citizen Science project that aims to gather Australia wide data about birds occupying local habitats (ie: Bendigo backyards).
See how many Crows (whoops, I mean Ravens) and other bird species are around. It should be informative and fun.

Teams were asked to give themselves a name that would NOT identify the participants. This was to ensure that as teams were to score each other’s questionnaires the organisers wanted the scoring to be fair and legitimate!

Our MYSTERY TOUR left Lake Weeroona, headed through North Bendigo, Eaglehawk, Myers Flat and arrived at THE GREAT STUPA OF UNIVERSAL COMPASSION where we had morning tea followed by a presentation by Ian Green  and a very informative tour by tour guide Donna.
RCOBS have donated $500 to The Stupa.
The tour then went to Marong for some sightseeing followed by lunch at the Marong Family Hotel.
 
Yes, some of the organisers answers to questions were questioned by participants but the organisers answers were ALWAYS CORRECT!

The great RCOBS Mystery Tour 2023
Spring has sprung at Lightning Reef
Spring is here and it's vegie time!
The Lightning Reef Primary School gardening program is part of our .....Youth Projects and has recommenced after a short break over the winter months,
The children joined in enthusiastically.
This term the program is focusing on younger children but it appeals to kids of all ages.
The children participate in preparation of the garden beds as well as planting and harvesting beautiful healthy greens like these silverbeet (right).
Thanks to Stew and the Rotarians who helped out.
The program usually operates with two adults and around 10 children.
The families benefit because the kids can take the produce home.
They also learn valuable gardening skills that they might not otherwise have a chance to learn.

Guest speaker - Graeme Clark
Fellow Rotarian (Bendigo Rotary) Graeme is the person responsible for overseeing the emergency communications which are broadcast through KLFM. KLFM was set up during the 1980's with a Seniors Class License which meant that it was geared to the interests, especially musically, of those over the age of 55. Apart from the General and Business Manager the station is run completely by volunteers. KLFM takes in the 3AW news and covers the areas of Bendigo, Eaglehawk and Castlemaine. Coverage extends a little further through the flatter areas.
 
KLFM branched into the area of emergency communication in 2014 as a result of the Royal Commission into the Black Saturday fires. Whilst all community radio stations have a license to undertake this important community service KLFM is the only station which has taken it up. Whilst the ABC broadcasts emergencies on a state basis there is a need to provide additional information at a regional level. There were over 3,000 emergency announcements made during the 2022 floods, most of these relating to the Rochester area.
 
Graeme has generously shared his IT and data analysis skills to research and enhance the delivery of information which is available through Emergency Victoria. There is a greater level of sharing of the information which comes from many sources including Vic Roads, CFA, Ambulance Victoria and the SES. Graeme has promoted the importance of recording this data so that it can be used to identify improvements for the future. Whilst there are some privacy issues most of this data can be made public and used as part of the evaluation process. Communities have been made aware of issues such as the importance of having boiled water on hand as a result of the productive use of this data.
 
Graeme's presentation heightened awareness about KLFM's contribution to community safety made largely by volunteers. His involvement has added great value to the services which are possible through Emergency Victoria. There is no doubt that the work of KLFM will provide insights for other communities in providing this service. We congratulate and thank Graeme for his generous contribution to the development and improvement of the emergency messaging services offered by KLFM. 
End polio month fundraising walk
As part of End Polio Month and the associated regional fundraising project, the Rotary Club of Bendigo South has organised a fundraising walk for Sunday the 22nd October at Lake Weeroona, Bendigo.
 
It is suggested that each Club could contribute to the Fundraising Project by registering their club in order to raise/donate funds for the District.

Dear Club President
 
I am writing regarding the Nominating Committee, which will be formed to select the District Governor for the Rotary year 2026 – 2027. As you would be aware the role of District Governor will change under the new Regionalisation model and some of the duties of this role are at this stage unclear. Hence flexibility will be needed. However I have had it confirmed that Districts are expected to carry out this selection process and have a candidate in place. The first step for this is the formation of the Nominating Committee. Attached to this communication is a sheet giving details of the make up of this Committee. As you will see the timeline indicates that nominations for positions on it are open from 1 – 31 October. If you have a suitably qualified Rotarian in your club who would like to be nominated please email their details to me by 31 October. If I receive more than three nominations then a ballot will be conducted with each club voting. Nominations for the District Governor position will open in early November. Please encourage your members to consider putting their names forward for this position. If you have any questions please contact either myself or Jane Pennington.
