President Report
President Report  May 5th
Greetings  Rotarians and friends of Bendigo Sandhurst,

Well Jim found a cracker of a speaker on Wednesday.  Craig Hancock, Health and Wellbeing Officer with Bendigo RSL had everyone’s full attention.
Two and a half years in Afghanistan with the ADF gave a remarkable perspective. The Bendigo connection, Bushmaster, kept him alive. Now he works for Thales.  Also Invictus Games London 2014,  Gold medallist.  Wow what a story. Reinforced our commitment to ANZAC Dawn Service for all present.
With Stewart away at a funeral we postponed the Creek cleanup. It will happen in a few weeks when it fits. Will advise.
The Annual Report for Changeover night is now a work in progress. It will need some photos which are in short supply given we were locked down for a good portion of the year. If you have a photo you think would fit, send it by email to tedg77@outlook.com or SMS to 0408506406.
Attached you will find a letter from the DG inviting contributions to the Rotary Foundation, and a contribution proforma.
CASA (Centre Against Sexual Assault) Bendigo is hosting a Community Consultation for the National Plan to reduce Violence against Women and Children on May 19th. See more details further down in the Bulletin.
We have formally applied to Bunnings to run Sausage Sizzles at Epsom with the plan to involve Lightning Reef PA. Possibility for one on June 19 or 20th. Will keep you posted.
Have received information about the Goldfields Clusters FORaMEAL working bees. (see letter from organiser Alison Bacon below) They each run for just two and a half hours. We need up to 12 volunteers. Pity it clashes with the Barham Weekend so that reduces the list of candidates.  Bendigo Friday June 4th 4.30 to 7 pm or Echuca  Saturday 12.30 to 3 pm. We will be looking for starters at next Wednesdays breakfast or you can email Ted now to say you are a available.  tedg77@outlook.com

IF YOU READ JUST ONE THING READ THIS.  We are planning to reintroduce the WHO IS AWAY register which will help us plan our meetings particularly during the winter when a lot of us look for warmer climes. If you know you will be away, then send Bruce an email brucefraser8@bigpond.com  Like this. “Ted & Liz will be away 4 July to 28 August”.  It will also make it easier for Bruce to set up rosters.
Dates for the Diary
  • Working Bee to cleanup along the Creek. After Rotary Date to be announced.
  • District Assembly.  New and continuing Board members Saturday 22 May 9.30 to 11.30 am

Have another great week
 cheers Ted.

Joke of the week:
Quote of the Week:
The world is in the grip of a cliche: can’t live with China, can’t live without it.
Alan Kohler 2021.
Graph of the week:
However China’s competitive advantage through having the largest labour force is now fading.
As you can see from that chart, China’s population advantage emerged in early 2000 and peaked in 2011, immediately after it joined the World Trade Organisation in 2001. That produced a positive supply shock in the global labour market that was given the name “globalisation”.
But, by 2020 China’s labour force had shrunk back to its 2006 level (771m). The population size difference between China and other ageing economies narrowed to 37% last year.
On present trends, China’s working age population will be below the global average by 2035.
That year is a big one for China: Xi Jinping talked about it in his ‘New Era’ development plan where China was going to be a “modernised socialist” society. But by 2050, China’s demographic dividend will have all but vanished. It needs to act now to stop it happening, if it can.

Guest speaker

Craig Hancock

The guest speaker for the meeting was Craig Hancock. Craig is the Health and Wellbeing Officer of the Bendigo Sub-Branch of the RSL. Before taking up this position he served in Afghanistan and worked at Thales in Bendigo. From an early age Craig dreamed of becoming a soldier. It was the air of romance about the role and the possibility of good winning out over evil which he found attractive. It was during his deployment in Afghanistan that he became aware of the harsh realities of war. Craig described an especially dangerous incident when he was forced to deal with the bombing of his Bushmaster and the crashing of an American helicopter nearby in quick succession.

It was inspirational to hear how Craig was able to disregard personal pain and safety and dedicate himself to the safety of others who had suffered more serious wounds. As time went on and the reality of war set in Craig's childhood dreams were shattered and this resulted in a loss of identity. He faced the challenge of healing from injuries which were more serious than first anticipated. The physical and mental strain took its toll as he faced the inevitable reality that this was something he could not, would not and would not be able to continue with.

An important part of Craig's rehabilitation was his involvement in the 2014 and 2017 Invictus Games. Unable to take up his much loved Rugby he competed in rowing and running with good success. He gradually moved away from the need for the army to shape his identity and became much more conscious of the importance of family. His wife and partner since the age of fifteen strongly encouraged him to complete an application for his current position with the RSL. He has made a very significant contribution to the development of support programs for returned soldiers. In many ways Bendigo is a blueprint for the rest of Victoria.

Craig is thriving on the opportunity to draw on his experience and to be proactive in exploring ways to support his colleagues and connecting them with the community. His conclusion is that western war culture doesn't address the phase of coming home. Crag has been incredibly generous in his service to the country and his colleagues. His talk vindicated the importance of the ongoing connection which the Club has with the RSL. We thank him for being our guest and for his very engaging and thought provoking presentation.

Spotted Graeme Lynas out and about in Lyttleton Arcade.... took a minute to recognize him

Lightning Reef Garden
This is another small part of our ongoing support for Lightning Reef. We have 3 plots ready to go. The school plans for 6 to 8 kids to work the plots, supervised by a teacher each Wednesday afternoon from 2:15 to 3:15, commencing next Wednesday 5th May. The school would appreciate someone from Rotary to be there each week to help and, more importantly, just to interact with the kids. We need volunteers to work on rotation with the kids at the garden each week. We only need one (or two) volunteers each week. If you are able to help and join the pool of volunteers please e-mail stewart.annan@bigpond.com or text (0474 515 412). Stew will make up a roster for the next couple of months and advise other details.
