Hello fellow Rotarians,

Great news that ADG Graeme Lynas is back in Bendigo at SJoG. And feeling a whole lot better after two and a half weeks of real concern though he praises his care by staff at St Vincents. Might be in SJoG for a few days to get his rehab started.

Maurice, Barb and I tuned in to a Zoom session with DG Philip Archer last week that encouraged us to consider joining with other Goldfields clubs a new “local” website called “Common Times” We will learn more at a presentation in Bendigo on April 24^th.

I have tried to contact our latest Timor Leste Uni student Sonia Maria de Almeida via the Bendigo Maubisse Friendship Committee and received a letter back from Sister Henrietta. It attached.

Board meeting on Tuesday night made a number of decisions:

Agreed to contribute our annual donation of $5,000 to the Rotary Foundation.
Encouraged the Youth Sub Committee of Cathie, Stewart and Ian to further the development of a plan for additional activities at Lightning Reef Primary including the garden, fruit and emergency lunches, reading to students and learning more about this years Passion Pathways and the best way to assist
Explore opportunities to be involved in Bunnings BBQs (job for Ted)
Committed to support Bendigo Victory at this years RECLINK football season providing BBQs with the first match on 28 April against Sunbury Melton. There will be 4 home games.
Considered the nomination of Sathie Naidoo.
There has been a little interest shown for a couple of other Bendigo Clubs in the Knitting Project
Next Board meeting June 1^st.

Mary Healy

The guests for the meeting were Mary Healy and her husband Geoff. Mary is the author of the book "Heffernan of the Shamrock" which details the life of William Heffernan, the first proprietor of the Shamrock Hotel. Heffernan and his business partner, John Crowley were of Irish descent, hence the name Shamrock. Entertainment provided at the Shamrock during the gold rush was on a grand scale. The hotel had a concert hall and its own orchestra. The majority of miners were living in tents and frequented the Shamrock for entertainment, meals and even water.

Heffernan was born in 1803 In Ireland at a time of great poverty when life expectancy was only forty years of age. At the age of twelve he joined the constabulary and was rewarded with land in Nova Scotia. At this time Irish immigrants experienced terrible discrimination in the Americas.He married and had two daughters and eventually travelled to the US and Central America. Mary outlined a particularly treacherous journey which he undertook in Panama. He ended his time in America on the goldfields of California where he did quite well for himself.

He sailed from San Francisco on the Eagle in the company of John Crowley along with the founders of Cobb and Co and many who were involved in the uprising at Eureka. On arriving in Bendigo he took over the Shamrock and built the Theatre Royal. It is estimated that he organised entertainment for between 800 and 1200 people every night for six years.His passion for music saw him open other venues such as St. James Hall on the current Myer site. A farm was set up at Axedale to supply food for the hotel. These developments were possible only by heavily mortgaging the Shamrock and as the goldrush declined so did the demand for entertainment. After a lengthy lawsuit the Shamrock passed onto other hands.

The Shamrock is an icon of Bendigo where many community ventures including the Easter Fair had their beginnings. Heffernen has left a rich legacy and mark on the hospitality and entertainment industries of Bendigo. Congratulations to Mary on all she has achieved over ten years of research and writing. She has made a wonderful contribution in assisting Bendigoians to be better informed about our rich history. The details for ordering a copy of the book are included in this bulletin. We thank Mary and Geoff for making the trip in from Mt. Camel to be our guests.

ANZAC DAY COMMEMORATIVE SERVICE - SUNDAY 25th APRIL 2021

On behalf of the Bendigo District RSL Sub-Branch Inc. I wish to extend an invitation to the Rotary Club of Bendigo Sandhurst to participate in our ANZAC Day Gunfire Breakfast after the ANZAC Day Dawn Service.

6:00 am Dawn Service. Traditionally, the Rotary Club of Bendigo Sandhurst has generously provided volunteers and cooking facilities for the Gunfire Breakfast while the Bendigo District RSL or its sponsors have provided the sausages, bread, sauce, etc.

At present we are still confirming details surrounding this event, including number of attendees, location requirements and confirmation that the traditional Gunfire Breakfast is able to proceed due to current restrictions, in the meantime we would like to have everything in place and plan for the best outcome.

We would like your club to participate in this community event again in 2021 and assist from 5:30 am with the setting-up of tables etc., in preparation to serve the veterans and families by 6:30 am.

Late one evening, during a terrible storm, a man brought his pregnant wife into the maternity ward. The wife was well into labour when the power went out.

While they waited for the generator to kick in, the doctor handed the father-to-be a torch and said, “Hold this up high so I can see what I am doing.”

Soon, there was a loud cry and a the doctor announced, “It’s a boy!”

The man went to put the torch down and cradle his newborn son.

“Whoah there,” said the doctor. “You don’t want to be in such a rush to put that torch down. I think there’s another baby on its way.”

The man was surprised. He hadn’t been expecting twins, but sure enough — within minutes — the doctor delivered another baby.

“A girl!” he cried.

The man was overwhelmed and went to put the torch down again.

“Hold on a minute,” said the doctor. “I think there’s another baby on its way.”

The man stared in disbelief as the doctor delivered his third baby.

“Can I put the torch down now, doc?” he asked.

“Not yet. It seems there is another baby coming.”

The man scratched his head in bewilderment.

“Doc, do you think it might be the light that’s attracting them?”
