Bendigo Foodshare 2021 Mobile Christmas Food Pantry
Thank you for your assistance with our 2021 Mobile Christmas Food Pantry. Thanks to you, our amazing community, we believe we once more have the Service Club volunteers, the agency volunteers and the van logistics worked out for food relief in the Christmas school holidays.

Each service club to be responsible for rostering the volunteers for their shifts as noted below. Each shift starts at Bendigo Foodshare at shed 2, 43 A Havilah Rd, Long Gully.
Sad week with the funeral John Langley PHF also one our Charter members. Great turn out from our Club dressed in our Rotary polo shirts. Speaking to Elma she was most impressed with the service and especially with two of our members officiating.
Thanks to all members who helped out at Toyota Golf Day in support of Food Share. Twenty three teams (92 players) had entered for the day including our Club a great opportunity to showcase Rotary at work, I must point out there were a lot comments on our branding on the cool room and equipment trailer. A quick call from Team Captain Doug our team was not disgraced by any means, more to follow at next weeks meeting?

Dianne is a journalist., book reviewer and a writer, her latest book is, When He came Home, which tells the story of what happened to Vietnam veterans when they came home from their service in this theatre of war.
Diane explained that throughout her career as a journalist she has always been in search of a good story and in particular the untold stories that shed a new light in particular events or institutions, this deepens our understanding and gives a more complete understanding. She spoke about an anti-nuclear warrior who took people hostage for the cause, she tracked down someone who had ben abducted and she spoke of the trauma she had experienced. She researched St Aidens Orphanage and was able to hear form residents of this institution, the story of Cathleen was particularly moving.
In her latest book she spoke to Vietnam veterans, their partners and children, she wanted to hear their stories and understand how participating in the war impacted on their lives. In 1970 when the veterans returned they were shunned, public opinion had shifted and rather than being regarded as heroes they were ignored as we wanted to forget about this episode in our military history. THE RSL did not recognise their service.
At this time PTSD was not recognised, Dianne said that after the first World War it was called shell shock, after the Second, combat fatigue, by 1980 PSTD was recognised. For Vietnam veterans who had been suffering depression, alienation, overwhelmed, flashbacks and trouble with relationships; they now recognised this was not just their inability to cope and ‘get on with things’, but a medical condition.
This severely impacted on the veterans, partners, and children. They often suffered in isolation, not understanding that others were inflicted with this syndrome. One manifestation is that they like to get away from people and live in remote places, this can become really difficult for partners who have little support. The children suffered too, suffering high rates of suicide and depression. When He came Home, tells the story of these veterans, and their families and is an important contribution to this important part of our history.
The club has approved a request from Anglicare Bendigo Foster Care Support
To supply a BBQ at 4pm on Friday Dec 10th, at Bgo Water World for approx 150 adults and children.
The request is to supply BBQ and bread/sausages/sauce for approx 150 people for their Christmas breakup.
The club would only need another 5 members to cook and serve.
