Presidents Report
Our chairperson this week was Barbara Mitchell - many thanks, Barbara for controlling our members and keeping the meeting on track and to schedule.
Guest Speaker this week was Brooke West, an Exercise Physiologist from the Bendigo Exercise Physiology Clinic.
Brooke stated she was passionate about her desire to improve the health of mainly older people (that is, the over 50’s) in the Bendigo and Heathcote communities. Her company operates two clinics; one in Strathdale and another in Heathcote.  The company works closely with other allied health professionals, especially physiotherapists.  It offers group and one-to-one exercise physiology sessions, with a focus on increasing joint mobility, muscular strength, endurance and aerobic fitness.  The company devises home exercise programs, and monitors clients exercise diaries – this supports adherence to programmes as well as monitoring the risk of overtraining, which increases the risk of injury.  Brooke stated that the most important thing for more senior people was to maintain activity and movement, rather than strenuous exercise, or the inappropriate use of weights.
One of the popular group activities is Nordic Walking, which incorporates the use of poles to assist walking.  This increases walkers’ aerobic activity, and makes the walker use all the muscles from head to toe.
Brooke answered many questions from the floor, as members felt that the information was very relevant for our demographic.  We thank Brooke for coming along and sharing her knowledge on this subject and her passion for improving Bendigo and Heathcote community health and wellbeing.
Guest Speaker Brooke West and Chairperson Barbara Mitchell.
Knitting Project

Thanks, George, for stepping in and thanking the ladies for all their efforts and to reiterate the valuable contribution they make to needy families in Timor Leste.

.
Ladies hard at work with Rotarians standing/sitting idly by in awe ……..
Email from Patti Cotton to me (Toni) around 5pm today:
“Ray Carrington called to tell me that there were 35 large bags of knitting completed and transported across to John & Barbara Cannons’ shed, at the conclusion of another amazing day.  Our project has always been twofold - to benefit the babies and children of Timor Leste, and to provide a strong community spirit among ladies who are part of this Rotary project.  Huge thanks to all who made today so special - thanks to our amazing Mayor Marg O’Rourke, and to our long-standing friend Heather Ridge.  Both of you have so many demands on your time - we value that you give generously of this time to share your experiences with us and our sewers.  I do not have email addresses for all the Rotarians who gave their time and hope Ray will follow that up. To Carol and the catering team, and Nancy and the 'supply team'- WOW.  I cannot tell you how grateful I am and just how easy you all make my job...   Huge, Huge thanks to you all for another great sewing day with 35 -yes 35 -yes 35 bags of knitted sets completed and stored awaiting for available baling time”.
**Note from Ray – as we can all see, Dame Patti was very pleased with todays’ work at the Mechanics Hall.  My personal thanks to all members who were able to give their time today to help out.

Happy Birthday to all our Members & Spouses who celebrated Birthdays this month: -
David Breaden, Paul Kirkpatrick, Pat Sheehan, Bruce Fraser, Stan Hendy and spouses Lisa Ruffell and Alison Harris.
Finally, the raffle was won by Ned Upton – congratulations Ned.

Calling for Help From Bendigo Service Clubs for 2019 Christmas Holidays Food Relief

The Problem
  • Since Heathcote Foodshare (HFS) closed on 20th Sep, Bendigo Foodshare (BFS) has had to step up to a 7 day a week (excluding Pub Hols) food collection service as this task was previously shared between the two organisations.
  • BFS is still 40 volunteers short for ideal running of this 7 day a week service, thus whilst they have stepped into the breach that was created, existing BFS volunteers need breaks over the Xmas holidays.
  • Schools and most agencies who give out the food during the year gradually shut down over the six weeks of the Christmas school holidays.
  • People still need food relief
  • If we do not get assistance to collect and give out the food over the 6 week school holiday period around 60 tonne per month of food will go to waste

Proposed Solution for Christmas Holidays 2019: Distribution of food directly at one agency each day
  1. Five existing food relief agencies around town each open for 2 hours on one specific day each week. Each agency will have space for the van to park, shade, trestle tables, volunteers/staff to check customer eligibility for food relief according to their normal protocols. Provided they do this, no additional permits should be required from Council (tbc).
  2. Five Service Club's help by staffing the Xmas food relief 1 day each week to staff and drive the vans van for pick up from the supermarkets and delivery/distribution of the food at the nominated site with the local agency staff
  3. Bendigo Foodshare staff/volunteers to coordinate each day, operate the warehouse, ensure left over food is put away or disposed of appropriately, and clean out the vans and crates.(2  experienced volunteers).

Bendigo Foodshare would advertise locations and days heavily through schools, agencies, etc before they close. Criteria for food is normally show a health care card, and bring your own bags. NB Some agencies do not require Healthcare card.

Early days with this plan. Please let us know if you think your club will be able to provide volunteers to assist us over this time.  We will then work out the finer details and get back to you. Feel free to contact me at any time if you have any questions.

Jokes
A school teacher sent her student home with a note

One day a school teacher sent her student home with a note for his mother.
The note read: “Your son is an obedient and bright student, but spends too much time talking to girls.”
The next day the student returned with a note from his mother to be handed back to the teacher.
It read: “Please advise a solution. Father has the same problem.”

A man is stopped by a police officer

A man who is driving is stopped by a police officer. The man says: “What’s the problem, officer?”

The officer says: “You were going at least 75km/h in a 55km/h zone.”

“No sir, I was going 65.”

The man’s wife leans over and says: “Oh, Harry, you were going 80.”

The man gives his wife a dirty look. While the officer says: “I’m also going to give you a ticket for your broken brake light.”

The man answers: “Broken brake light? I didn’t know about a broken brake light!”

Once again the man’s wife leans over and says: “Oh, Harry, you’ve known about that brake light for weeks.”

The man gives his wife another frustrated glare.

“I’m also going to give you a citation for not wearing your seatbelt,” the officer says.

The man answers: “Oh, I just took it off when you were walking up to the car.”

“Oh, Harry, you never wear your seatbelt,” the wife says without a pause.

The man turns to his wife and yells: “Shut your mouth!”

The officer turns to the woman and asks: ‘Ma’am, does your husband talk to you this way all the time?”

The wife answers: “No, only when he’s been drinking!”
