Edwin was born in Bendigo and was a former member of Rotary Melbourne. He now volunteers his time to the work of the Smith Family and took the opportunity to combine a trip home with a visit to our Club to tell the Smith Family story. The Smith Family commenced its work in the Christmas of 1922 when five Sydney businessmen stopped off at an orphanage in the Blue Mountains and shared some sweets and toys with the children there. Wanting to remain anonymous when asked their names they all said they were Mr. Smith.
The work of the Smith family is informed by an analysis of the causal factors of poverty and disadvantage. These include illiteracy, crime, drug and alcohol abuse which often combine to people leading a dysfunctional life.The key to breaking this cycle is the provision of educational opportunities which people need to engage in from a very young age before the onset of failure sets in. As a consequence the sole focus of the work of the Smith family is supporting youth to properly engage in school. Edwin outlined that this support goes way beyond providing books and uniforms, although these are both important.
The Smith Family draws on funds from donations and government grants. However some 10,000 volunteers make a very significant contribution to the work. This voluntary work includes the likes of Edwin's contribution towards administration including data analysis and a range of opportunities for family mentors. Families sign on with a commitment to school attendance and an openness to ongoing mentor support. This support includes a range of suggestions from mentors about literacy support with young children to vocational guidance for older students.
It was informative for members to hear that there are 600 families supported by the Smith Family in the Bendigo area. 70% of Smith Family graduates go onto further study and 30% are successful in gaining employment. This is wonderful testament to the effectiveness of this model.The financial costs to the taxpayer of a dysfunctional life are over $1 million. The Smith Family turns around a significant number of lives engaging them in meaningful work and often taking on leadership roles supporting family and community members. We express our thanks to Edwin for his well researched and informative presentation.

We have received a request from Anglicare Bendigo Foster Care Support
To supply a BBQ at 4pm on Friday Dec 10th, at Bgo Water World for approx 100 adults and children.
The request is to supply BBQ and bread/sausages/sauce for approx 100 people for their Christmas breakup.
Kevin has already verified the BBQ is available that day and he is willing to help with the event.
The club would only need another 5 members to cook and serve.
All costs wouyld be born by the club, probable less than $150.
